SUNFIRE GIRLS PROGRAM

Sunfire – Wilderness Therapy for Adolescent Girls (Ages 13–17)

Sunfire is blueFire's therapeutic program for teen girls, ages 13–17, who are struggling emotionally, socially, or within their family systems. Our team combines clinically intensive treatment, adventure therapy, and a structured basecamp model to help adolescent girls develop emotional regulation, confidence, and healthier relationships.

Sunfire offers a therapeutic environment for girls that balances challenge with safety, connection with independence, and growth with stability.

Who Sunfire Is Designed For: Adolescent Girls

Sunfire may be a strong fit for adolescent girls who are:

  • Experiencing anxiety, depression, or mood dysregulation
  • Struggling with low self-worth, shame, or identity development
  • Engaging in social withdrawal or isolating from peers and family
  • Impacted by trauma, attachment disruption, or relational loss
  • Caught in escalating conflict at home
  • Over-reliant on screens, social media, or online relationships
  • Capable and intelligent, yet disengaged from school or daily responsibilities

Sunfire is not an appropriate fit for adolescents with active psychosis, severe eating disorders requiring medical monitoring, repeated violent behavior, or primary substance dependence.

Why a Girls-Specific Wilderness Therapy Program Matters

Adolescent girls experience and express distress differently than boys—particularly during the teenage years, when relationships, identity, and emotional sensitivity are central to development.

Sunfire is intentionally structured to address these realities. Treatment prioritizes:

  • Emotional and relational safety
  • Healthy expression of feelings before behavior change
  • Identity development and self-awareness
  • Connection, trust, and appropriate boundaries

By working within a girls' peer group, clients are better able to explore vulnerability, build authentic relationships, and engage fully in the therapeutic process. Group placement is guided by developmental history, emotional safety, and clinical fit — our admissions team is happy to walk through specifics for your child during a confidential consultation.

Clinically Intensive Nature-Based Therapy for Girls

blueFire sets a higher clinical standard than traditional wilderness programs. In Sunfire, girls receive:

  • A licensed therapist embedded with the group
  • 4–5 days per week
  • Two individual therapy sessions each week
  • Four therapist-led group therapy sessions each week
  • Weekly equine therapy, focused on boundaries, trust, and emotional awareness

Therapists utilize evidence-based approaches including CBT, DBT, EMDR, attachment-based work, and family systems therapy. Groups are small, age-specific, and carefully composed to support safety and growth.

Family Therapy and Parental Involvement

Sunfire works with the entire family system, not just the identified client. Parental involvement begins at admission and continues throughout the client’s stay.

Families participate in:

  • Weekly phone or video calls with the primary therapist
  • Structured parent education and assignments
  • Family therapy beginning around weeks three to four
  • The Family Spark, a four-day on-site parent and child workshop near discharge

Sustainable change happens when families learn new ways of communicating, setting boundaries, and supporting growth together.

Integrated Family Therapy: One Therapist, One Treatment Plan

At blueFire, family therapy is not outsourced or separated from the client’s treatment.

The same primary therapist who works directly with your child in the field also works with parents throughout the program. This therapist knows your child personally: their strengths, struggles, patterns, and progress. They are actively involved in daily treatment, group dynamics, and individual therapy.

Many programs assign family work to a separate family coach or off-site clinician who may never meet the client or observe their behavior firsthand. At blueFire, we believe this separation can limit effectiveness.

By keeping client and family work fully integrated:

  • Parents receive guidance grounded in real-time clinical observation
  • Family sessions are more accurate, nuanced, and actionable
  • Therapists can directly connect family dynamics to the client’s lived experience
  • Treatment remains aligned, consistent, and relationally intact

This continuity strengthens trust, improves communication, and supports lasting change both during the program and after discharge.

Nature-Based Therapy With Stability

Sunfire operates within blueFire’s hybrid basecamp model, which combines the therapeutic power of wilderness with the predictability and comfort many adolescent girls need to regulate emotionally.

Clients rotate between expedition-based wilderness travel and established basecamps that include:

  • Heated yurts or seasonally appropriate shelters
  • Consistent routines and daily accountability
  • Dedicated space for individual and group therapy
  • Weekly hot showers and reliable access to nourishing food

This model allows girls to feel physically safe and supported, creating the foundation necessary for deeper emotional work.

Adventure Therapy With Purpose

Testimonials

blueFire Wilderness has been the most helpful therapeutic experience for my daughter. She had spiraled downward over 1 1/2 years to where she was mostly truant, had severe anxiety and depression, and spent most days in her room online or sleeping. All the staff at blueFire were excellent and my daughter’s therapist was fantastic. She was able to reach and promote change in my daughter, giving her the skills to cope with anxiety and depression. She has rekindled her appreciation for nature and has a newfound sense of things that are truly important to her such as friends, family, and personal contact.

blueFire was a godsend for our child, who had no desire to live anymore due to mental health challenges. We did not know how to keep her safe at home and get her to engage in therapy. blueFire turned her ship around. The therapist overseeing her care was brilliant... They helped our child challenge her beliefs, rediscover herself, and rebuild herself. It was not an easy process, but it was very successful.

My daughter attending WT with blueFire last summer and it was an exceptional experience. Her therapist is one of my favorite people and provided my daughter with the support and nurturing that she needed. blueFire is very professional and attentive when your child is there and I highly recommend them. WT is a difficult decision to make but my daughter reflects that it was hard but good experience for her.
