blueFire Embers Program for Young Boys (11–14)
Embers is blueFire’s program for pre- and early-adolescent boys ages 11–14 whose developmental needs are best met in a highly structured, relationship-forward therapeutic environment. Embers is designed for younger boys who benefit from clear expectations, consistent support, and strong adult guidance as they build foundational emotional and behavioral skills.
At this stage of development, boys are still learning how to recognize emotions, tolerate frustration, and navigate relationships with parents, teachers, and peers. Embers provides a supportive setting where these foundational skills can be developed before the increased pressures of later adolescence.
We help clients that may be struggling with one or more of the following issues: grief or loss, low self-esteem, anger, adoption issues, trauma, learning disabilities, school refusal or failure, social struggles, executive functioning issues and may have a long history of behavioral or emotional problems.

Who We Help
Embers may be a strong fit for boys ages 11–14 who may have a diagnosis such as:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
- Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Young boys who have had a long-standing battle with these issues tend to be a great fit for our program. While not limited to this list, here are some behaviors that potential candidates may exhibit:
- Struggling with emotional regulation, anger, or frequent outbursts
- Experiencing anxiety, low mood, or social withdrawal
- Having difficulty following rules or accepting adult authority
- Falling behind academically due to behavioral or emotional challenges
- Caught in escalating conflict at home or school
- Sensitive, reactive, or easily overwhelmed by stress
- Resistant to traditional outpatient therapy or school-based interventions

Teaching Important and Useful Skills
Throughout this program, we focus on teaching and developing skills that will be transferable to the real world. Our students learn healthy coping skills, communication skills, organizational skills, and much more.
A combination of of individual, group, equine and family therapy are used to help students focus on their own behaviors, identify their feelings, understand where those feelings are coming from and learn healthy ways to cope with those feelings.
By removing young boys from their fast-paced lives and away from distractions, they are better able to engage and reflect on their own behaviors and the way that these behaviors impact the world around them. Embers sees the value in experiential learning as every step of this journey serves as a teachable moment for students to grow and improve from.
A Clinically Intensive, Supportive Model
Embers offers a level of clinical support that exceeds traditional wilderness therapy models, particularly for younger clients.
Boys in Embers receive:
- A licensed therapist embedded with the group 4–5 days per week
- Two individual therapy sessions each week
- Four therapist-led group therapy sessions each week
- Weekly equine therapy focused on emotional awareness, boundaries, and trust
Therapists utilize evidence-based approaches including CBT, DBT-informed skills, attachment-based therapy, and family systems work. Groups are small, age-specific, and carefully composed to support safety and growth.

Wilderness Therapy With Structure and Predictability
Embers operates within Bluefire’s hybrid basecamp model, combining the therapeutic value of wilderness experiences with the consistency and predictability younger boys need.
Clients rotate between wilderness expeditions and established basecamps that include:
- Heated yurts or seasonally appropriate shelters
- Clear daily routines and expectations
- Space for individual and group therapy
- Weekly hot showers and consistent access to nourishing food
This structure reduces unnecessary stress and allows boys to focus on emotional growth.
Adventure and Experiential Learning
Adventure in Embers is designed to build confidence, cooperation, and problem-solving.
Activities may include:
- Hiking and backpacking
- Rock climbing
- Mountain biking
- Horsemanship and equine therapy
- Team-based challenges and skill-building initiatives
Each activity is supported by staff and processed therapeutically to help boys connect effort with outcome, build resilience, and experience success in healthy ways.
