blueFire Bonfire Program for Teen Boys (Ages 14–17)

Bonfire is blueFire's therapeutic program for teen boys, ages 14–17, struggling with emotional regulation, behavioral challenges, academic disengagement, or family system conflict.

Our team combines clinically intensive therapy, adventure-based experiences, and blueFire’s structured basecamp model to help teenage boys develop accountability, resilience, and healthier relationships.

Bonfire is designed for boys who need more than talk therapy but less than institutional care. The program challenges boys appropriately while providing consistent therapeutic support, clear expectations, and meaningful connections.

Why a Boys-Specific Wilderness Therapy Program Matters

Adolescent boys often express distress through behavior rather than words. Bonfire is intentionally structured to meet boys where they are developmentally—using action, accountability, and relationship-based interventions to promote insight and change.

Treatment emphasizes:

  • Clear structure and predictable expectations
  • Experiential learning and confirmed competence
  • Responsibility, follow-through, and internal motivation
  • Healthy peer relationships and respectful authority

By working within a boys' peer group, clients can engage fully, reduce comparison or posturing, and build trust within a developmentally appropriate peer culture. Group placement is guided by developmental history, emotional safety, and clinical fit — our admissions team is happy to walk through specifics for your child during a confidential consultation.

Clinically Intensive Nature-Based Therapy for Boys

Bonfire offers a level of clinical care that exceeds traditional wilderness therapy standards:

  • Licensed therapist embedded with the group, 4–5 days per week
  • Two individual therapy sessions each week
  • Four therapist-led group therapy sessions each week
  • Weekly equine therapy focused on boundaries, leadership, and emotional awareness

Therapists utilize evidence-based approaches, including CBT, DBT, EMDR, motivational interviewing, and family systems therapy. Groups are small, age-specific, and intentionally composed.

Family Therapy and Parental Involvement

Bonfire addresses the entire family system, recognizing that lasting change requires parental involvement and alignment.

Families participate in:

  • Weekly calls with the primary therapist
  • Structured parent education and assignments
  • Family therapy beginning around weeks three to four
  • The Family Spark, a four-day on-site parent and child workshop near discharge

Parents learn how to support progress, set healthy boundaries, and rebuild trust.

Integrated Family Therapy: One Therapist, One Treatment Plan

At blueFire, family therapy is not outsourced or separated from the client’s treatment.

The same primary therapist who works directly with your child in the field also works with parents throughout the program. This therapist knows your child personally: their strengths, struggles, patterns, and progress. They are actively involved in daily treatment, group dynamics, and individual therapy. Many programs assign family work to a separate family coach or off-site clinician who may never meet the client or observe their behavior firsthand. At blueFire, we believe this separation can limit effectiveness.

By keeping client and family work fully integrated:

  • Parents receive guidance grounded in real-time clinical observation
  • Family sessions are more accurate, nuanced, and actionable
  • Therapists can directly connect family dynamics to the client’s lived experience
  • Treatment remains aligned, consistent, and relationally intact

This continuity strengthens trust, improves communication, and supports lasting change both during the program and after discharge.

Nature-Based Therapy With Stability

Bonfire operates within blueFire’s hybrid basecamp model, blending wilderness expeditions with consistent basecamp support.

Boys rotate between expedition weeks and established basecamps that include:

  • Heated yurts or seasonally appropriate shelters
  • Consistent routines and daily accountability
  • Dedicated space for individual and group therapy
  • Regular access to nutritious meals and weekly showers

This structure supports emotional regulation, reduces unnecessary stress, and allows boys to focus on growth rather than survival.

Adventure Therapy With Purpose

Adventure is a central therapeutic tool in Bonfire. While it can be great fun, our team strategically works adventure activities as catalysts for growth.

Experiences may include:

  • Hiking and backpacking
  • Rock climbing
  • Mountain biking
  • Whitewater rafting
  • Horsemanship and equine therapy
  • Mindfulness and reflection practices

Each activity is clinically designed to help the boys' group connect effort to outcome, recognize personal strengths, and apply skills to life beyond the program.

Testimonials

It is not an understatment to say that blueFire likely saved our son’s life. We are so happy with the progress and all the work that he did. We are all still a work in progress, of course. But the whole family has had a second chance. The reboot that it gave us and our sone was so life-changing. I can not recommend them enough.

- Bonfire Family feedback

Everyone at bluefire was helpful and understood that our family is in a difficult and confusing situation. Our therapist was Charles. In 8 years of therapy, he was the only one who reached my son in a way that will change his life for the better. My son came out with a greater understanding of what he needs to work on, and of others. He now knows that he can be a leader, and he doesn’t have to feel bad about himself.

- Bonfire Family feedback

blueFire was a leap of faith and turned out to be a wonderful choice for our 17-year-old son. They guided him to become more open, talk things through and really come in touch with his feelings, actions and take accountability for himself. They also helped guide parents through a book and Family Spark experience to connect as a family to better understand each person’s part in the drama triangle.
