At BlueFire Wilderness, we help teens struggling with unresolved trauma. Childhood trauma often leads to behavioral and emotional regulation issues. Through our wilderness therapy program, clients can work through their underlying traumas in a supportive environment conducive to change.
Clinicians at BlueFire approach trauma treatment very intentionally. As part of the base for trauma work, we ensure clients have a strong mindfulness-based foundation. Mindfulness activities help teach self-regulation and are a great starting point for dealing with trauma in a healthy, productive way. Through yoga and meditation, clients are taught how to respond instead of react to their emotions.
Providing long-term tools for students to practice when dealing with trauma or similarly difficult events is critical to their success. Finding what types of therapies work best for each individual is part of the process. At BlueFire, our therapists use:
- Equine Therapy
- Trauma Resource Institute Somatic
- Wilderness Setting
- Community Resiliency Model
Each of these therapies teaches students different ways to process trauma. Modalities like EMDR help individuals identify negative core beliefs and work well for those with previously identified traumas. Brainspotting allows a therapist to discover where in the brain the client stores trauma. CBT helps clients recognize the connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. When clients are able to recognize the distortions in their thinking, they can work toward correcting them and the behaviors that occur as a result.
The goal of trauma work is to help clients build resilience and understand they are capable of overcoming setbacks. It’s important for them to reorient control of their lives. Through the variety of therapeutic modalities used, we are able to help clients overcome their trauma-related challenges.
