Individualized Clinical Approach
BlueFire is a treatment plan-based program. We are not a level system. Day in and day out, our therapists are supporting and guiding clients in their journey toward wellness. At blueFire Wilderness, therapists are in the field with clients 4- 5 days a week. We believe that the increased clinical time provides continuous opportunities for clients to build connections and trust, gain a better understanding of their struggles, learn healthy coping skills, and gain self-confidence.
Clients have access to their primary therapists and milieu therapists 4-5 days a week. Informal sessions during field activities, lunch breaks, or in the middle of adventure programming helps clients work through challenges in the moment. These learning experiences build confidence in clients’ ability to identify their needs and learn to effectively regulate their thoughts and emotions.

Our Clinical Model
Increased Clinical Time:
- Improves client/therapist relationships and trust
- Allows for in-the-moment learning
- Teaches clients to self-advocate
- Allows for a better assessment of the struggles and helps identify long term support and structure needed
Our clinical framework is fluid and flexible. We have no phase systems that clients must attain in order to move through the program. This flexibility enables clients with the ability to assess their own needs and have ownership of their work. Gaining internal awareness will help them change their lives. Having real, authentic conversations about what clients need and want their lives to be like, commits them to the process. We want your child’s voice to be heard.
Our approach uses therapeutic models like motivational interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and other evidence-based modalities to include clients in their own treatment planning process. Each client’s unique needs are met through the encouragement of feedback between them, their therapists, and peers.
Evidence and Outcome-Based Therapy
Field staff and therapists working with the client have extensive knowledge and experience. blueFire uses evidence-based therapies to best help each person accomplish their therapeutic goals. These approaches include:
- Motivational interviewing
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Equine assisted psychotherapy
- Experiential therapy
- Recreation therapy
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Neuro-feedback
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Brainspotting
- Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM)
- Hypnotherapy
- Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
Psychological Testing
PhD-trained clinical psychologists are conducting psychological and educational evaluations for many clients while they are at blueFire. The extensive knowledge of this type of cognitive and psychological testing allows blueFire therapists to gain insight into personality functioning, possible learning problems, cognitive deficits, mental health issues, and behavioral difficulties (including assessment of autism spectrum disorders). Onsite testing allows for all our clients to experience working one on one with professionals who can help them understand and process the anxiety, social issues, or academic issues that may have brought them to blueFire. Due to our experts’ vast knowledge and experience, clients at blueFire gain invaluable skill sets that provide reliable confidence upon returning home.
