I just wanted to reach out and say thank you for everything, I really got my life turned around there and I’m doing amazing right now! I have a job as a snowboard instructor, I just finished my basketball season and was named defensive player of the year. I started driving with my permit, *LEGALLY* and I’ve really fixed a lot up. Blue fire was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, and it was terrible when I did it. But now I see why it was so hard, not only did it help me be safe, but I’ve noticed that now when my friends are struggling in a bunch of different areas I’m not, AT ALL, and I owe you for that. That success is is every area too, conditioning for sports is nothing because of the hiking, school is easier to get stuff in, I have a girlfriend and am in a healthy relationship! Everything is going amazing right now and I know that if it wasn’t for blue fire I wouldn’t be where I am right now. I mean for god sakes I might have been dead or in jail if not for blue fire. So thank you for everything. I just wanted to check in and tell you how I was doing. Hope all is well.

Exceeded expectations on all fronts! The blueFire staff were deeply compassionate and highly professional. They took such good care of our child, who made a 180 degree turn around. And our child enjoyed the rock climbing, cross country skiing, and working with horses! I empathize with how scary this decision feels as a parent, and, knowing what we know now, I can say with absolute certainty that blueFire is not simply safe but a transformative gift we can give our struggling teens.

I was transported from Gateway Freedom Ranch (now permanently closed) to blueFire in late August 2019. I was 11. I struggled with impulsivity, defiance, bad relationships, and refusing things. I was immature and disrespectful. Out of the 7 boarding schools/treatment centers/psychiatric hospitals I went to ages 11-13, blueFire was the best and did the most. It is very expensive. But it will start to transform you into your best self and start the change that needs to happen. Expo is the hardest part of your time at blueFire. You hike the whole day, with 2 packs. This was very difficult for me considering it was very hot or very cold while I was there. (late August to early November) It pushed my mental, emotional, and physical endurance. As a almost high school athlete, this was beneficial. We had multiple therapy groups during the day, as well as multiple individual therapy sessions every week with two different therapists. On base days, we could have equine therapy or adventure therapy. We went to two different equine ranches that partner with blueFire, Amidas and Zonas. During adventure therapy we went to local canyons, rivers, and natural landscapes. The staff would always come with us and sometimes the therapists too. The food they provided us was very nutritional and healthy. An always exciting time was when we got new rations after we finished Expo. blueFire is definitely a transition. It can be very hard for teens and young adults who are so used to phones, alexa, and being lazy. You can not access any sort of technology at blueFire. You get phone calls with your family, and you have to work hard. You can earn the use of knives and sharp items. You will have accountability groups and difficult times with your group at blueFire. Almost all of the staff I interacted with seemed committed and interested in their job. They handle crisis situations as best as they can. There was one client in my group, “A”. She was under close supervision and was very resistant to the program and staff. We had only 2 staff during this time. On her 4th day, she jumped off a tall rock and broke multiple limbs. Emergency services and a helicopter came. The other two clients in my group were very scared and ran off to another group. That is the only negative situation that occurred to me during my time at blueFire, and the staff did all they could. Everything else that I thought was “bad” at the time was my fault or partially my fault. I cried, I sweat, I got dirty. I didn’t understand a lot at 11. But now I realize that blueFire was absolutely amazing for me. Some people could have had negative experiences. That is the case for all the 7 other therapeutic programs and schools/military school/hospitals I have been to. And that’s saying a lot. Different things work for different people. You will treasure and remember the good moments at blueFire. I discovered a lot about myself at blueFire. I cried, I got dirty, I sweat, I scowled, and I smiled. But most importantly, I changed. For the better. Thank you blueFire.

From blueFire, I’ve learned that the search for the “why” doesn’t always bear fruit; that humans are not problems to fix but rather individuals to understand; that I can’t be responsible for anyone else’s happiness; that trying to rescue is more self-serving than it is selfless; and that being a good mom means dropping the fallacy of control and focusing on the difficult work of parenting which is a daily practice in listening, affirming, consistency and love.

I graduated a little while ago (like 3 days ago) and wanted to email you guys. I promised Hannah I would and I never break a shake so I am. I think all of you know how much Bluefire has changed my life but I’ll say it again Bluefire changed my life for the better!!! I like to tell clients who are saying that they need to get better to leave that the point is not to “get better” but to leave in a better place then when you first arrived. I sure did practice what I preached cause I left in a much better place. I have not hurt myself once for a long time and have slowly gotten to the point where I don’t even the feel the urge to, I’ve been journaling every day and making my own assignments, my mom and I have continued making smart goals, and I’ve been using my coping skills and practicing them. I still read book after book after book. Of course. I also try to help my friends through conflict when they need it. I’m planning on teaching them the power of a vomp tomorrow. I’m at the point where I miss being there and I’m homesick to my group. I’ve grown to appreciate Bluefire and love my peers.

Our now 12 year old son went to Bluefire at 11 years old due to severe depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and school avoidance. We were desperate to save our son. After weeks in the Idaho desert at Bluefire, our son attributes the Bluefire team for saving his life and we all attribute Bluefire for saving our family. The staff and therapists are truly life-saving. Therapist, Mark Ellis, is a gift to all who cross his path. Our son tells us that when he is jealous of his peers, he remembers that only HE got to experience Bluefire. I know sending your child to Wilderness is the most difficult decision in your life. You are in the best hands at Bluefire.

I cannot say enough about blueFire. Our experience has been extremely positive all the way through. The program was amazing but the people even more so. From the program director to our fantastic therapists and all of the adventure and field staff we encountered some very special and amazing humans. The growth and progress we observed in our child in a relatively short time was astounding and we are truly grateful to everyone involved.

Sending my son to Blue Fire was a difficult decision, but it was well worth it.  Our son learned a lot and gained a better perspective on his life. Yes, we have had some bumps along the way, it’s been two years since the program and he is now working a full time job, he moved out of our house and is paying his own rent and taking good care of himself and his two dogs and two cats. One parent to another – I have no regrets and would recommend Blue Fire to any family who feels their child needs it!
