So, as Post explains it, sadness is a tool we can use to work through difficult issues and empathize with others–but what about depression and grief? Depression is much different than sadness. While sadness is a necessary and healthy emotion to experience, when it lasts for more than two weeks and comes with other issues–like loss of energy or problems focusing–that’s when it could be much more than sadness, it could be depression.
Now grief is also a bit different. Grief is often associated with depression because it can lead to depression, but they’re not one and the same. Grief is typical to feel for a long period of time, but it can definitely become an issue that gets in the way of daily life–much like depression. Even though grief is relatively common and becomes an issue for many people, therapy for teen grief goes largely unused. When something devastating happens, therapy should be the first place someone goes, it should be normal because it’s extremely healthy to talk to a professional and understand why you’re feeling what you’re feeling. Therapy for teen grief and depression has the power to help teens work through their hard emotions constructively and effectively.
