teen mental healthTeen mental health is critical for not only teen physical health, but for future success. Without a healthy mind, it’s difficult to move forward towards a full and flourishing future. While physical health will keep you walking and sitting up straight, mental health will get you through loss and stressful situations–they’re both necessary for survival. So, how do you help your child keep their mental health in tip top shape? Psych Central recently published an article outlining a few ways to help your teen grow into a happy adult.

Helping teen mental health flourish

There’s a lot of hate and negativity in our world right now. We’re more connected than ever, but at the same time we feel distant and constantly see bad things happening all over the globe. In the midst of all this, to stay healthy, we must take it upon ourselves to find positivity and love–and inspire our children to find it, too.
Here are some reasons from the article to “feel the love”:
Improves Mental Health. That’s right! Being positive and loving doesn’t only make you feel good, it actually improves your mental health. Those that find a positive view of events and have a less negative approach to situations find themselves with lower levels of depression and anxiety. Researchers believe this is because this mindset makes it easier to cope with difficult situations and stress. Instead of focusing on how bad the situation is, they take initiative towards how to rectify it. This is why positive and constructive thinking are so important for teen mental health.
Improves Physical Health. Mental and physical health are intertwined–they complete each other. One cannot thrive without the other, yet we act like teen mental health has nothing to do with their physical health. Mayo Clinic found that those who are more positive and caring live significantly longer and have less cardiovascular issues. There are so many studies showing the physical benefit of being kind to others and looking at the world with a more optimistic outlook–lower blood pressure, better immune systems, and more!
