Video games are rapidly becoming more realistic and immersive. They can provide whole other worlds and platforms for adolescents to explore, problem-solve, and discover. Studies show video games can definitely have a positive impact–but only if used in healthy doses. Research shows importance of relationships

A new study conducted by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health looked into the effects of strong friendships on teens experiencing the impact of video game addiction. Teens who play for more than four hours of video games a day often struggle with signs of depression–the researchers wanted to figure out what makes those symptoms less likely to appear. Turns out it has to do with friendship.
Participants that had strong social connections–whether online or offline–experienced less or no symptoms of depression. Researchers think the findings mean that simply playing video games for long hours doesn’t equal a video game addiction–it could just be a normal part of teenage development.
The leader of the study, Michelle Colder Carras, Ph.D., explained what this new information could mean:
“While playing video games for four hours a day can be worrisome behavior, not everyone who does so is at risk of developing symptoms of addiction or depression. If these adolescents are sitting around playing games together with their friends or chatting regularly with their friends online as they play, this could be part of a perfectly normal developmental pattern. We shouldn’t assume all of them have a problem.”
This isn’t to say that obsessively playing video games isn’t a sign of possible mental health issues, but it could definitely narrow down symptoms and make it easier to identify deeper problems.
Teens who go through video game addiction treatment often struggle with feelings of loneliness and anxiety, which would make video games their outlet for dealing with those emotions in a way they know how. Through video game addiction treatment, teens are taught a healthier, more constructive way of working through these emotions.
