When you have a teenager that’s struggling, it can begin to feel as if you have no options. Many families turn to traditional therapy–which can definitely help–but some find that nothing changes and their child continues to face challenges in life. This is when a program for defiant teens may be the next route.
A program for defiant teens uses many traditional forms of therapy (talk therapy, family therapy, group therapy, etc.) and combines it with other therapeutic approaches (adventure therapy, art therapy, etc.) to form a comprehensive, evidence-based avenue towards mental health.

What a program for defiant teens can do for your child

At our wilderness program for defiant teens, we focus on specific aspects in order to provide our students with the best treatment we can possibly give. Here are some of the ways we do that.

Removing the distractions of the modern world.
For many teens struggling with defiance, the reason traditional therapy isn’t quite doing the trick is because they’re not able to cut through the daily distractions around them. Their phone, their friends, their school life–it can all muddle up their mind and not allow them to move forward.
By placing them in an environment that takes those distractions away and focuses on personal reflection and growth, we give our students the opportunity to take a moment to breathe and make real progress.

Building & strengthening self confidence.
In our wilderness program for defiant teens, our students participate in many adventure activities that are designed to help them find confidence within themselves. By trying these new activities–kayaking, rock climbing, white water rafting, backpacking, etc.–students are able to learn more about themselves and what they’re capable of achieving.

Learning from mistakes.
Many of our teens struggle with taking responsibility for their actions. For example, it’s common for a client suspended from school to blame the school for being treated this way instead of recognizing what they did wrong.
When teens are placed in a natural, wilderness setting, they’re able to reflect on their actions more easily. Nature has a fantastic way of putting things into perspective that simply isn’t possible to do outside of it.

Working to heal the whole family.
We understand the importance of family. It’s the underlying and most important base of support for struggling teens–which means it has to be healed in order for the client to succeed when they return home. In our program for defiant teens, we frequently have families engage in therapeutic components in order to include the whole family in the healing process.
