It’s important for your teen to know that you are open to listening to them. Sometimes if parents are always super busy and not around the house as much as they’d like to, teens can feel even more removed. Actually telling your teen, “Listen, you can come to me with anything you’re going through. I’m there for you,” can increase their chances of coming to speak with you about their struggles.
Sometimes when parents struggle to give advice, it can come across as being critical. When helping your teen open up, you want to be extremely non-judgmental. They won’t open up to you if they think you’re judging them for what they have to say about depression in teenagers.
Getting therapeutic help
Getting your teen into therapy for depression in teenagers can be one the best things you can do for them. They might be resistant to the idea at first, but waiting patiently for them to be open to the idea might be worth it.
Another idea is to ask your teen about what they might want for you to do in order to help them. Their ideas might be surprising to you.
When it does come time to finding therapeutic help, finding the best fit for your child is super important. It needs to be someone they can trust and open up to. Group therapy might also be a good idea. Spending time with peers who are struggling with the same things your teen is going through can help them get through this tough time with the support they need.
