We all know how stressful the holiday season can be. Stores packed with people rushing to get last minute gifts, calendars booked with family get-togethers and holiday parties and kids out of school for two weeks with nothing to do. This can all drive any sane adult into a madman. What we often miss, though, is how holiday stress can impact troubled teens.

With all the stress that comes from holidays, coupled with unstructured free time, teenagers have ample reasons to intensify their current destructive behaviors.

Give your teen another option to release stress

Teens are very perceptive and tend to imitate the behaviors of those around them. If they see you stressing out over every little detail about the holidays, they will likely do the same. In order to deal with stress, they turn to ways to escape. Perceived stress relievers for troubled teens include:

  • Eating disorders
  • Substance abuse
  • Self-harm
  • Sexual promiscuity

Use this time to reassess how your teen is dealing with his or her mental, emotional and behavioral issues. If they are currently in therapy, determine if it is effective enough on its own. If you have been trying your best to handle their behaviors on your own, yet they are still persisting, it is time to seek more professional help. There are troubled teen programs available for to help your child learn to manage their stress.

Deciding between troubled teen programs can be a difficult decision

A short term, residential program is one of the best options to start with. It will offer your troubled teen 3-4 months of treatment to assess the situation, work with them on their behaviors and emotions and either transition back home to live more productively with better relationships or seek more help from a more intensive, longer program.
