Help for troubled teens isn’t always readily available–it’s unfortunate, but it’s a somber fact of living in a society which continues to ignore the importance of mental health. Because of this, it’s important to keep track of your mental health and teach others how to do the same. Tracking your emotions and feelings day-to-day can help in identifying unhealthy trends and triggers. 

Recently, one girl gained a lot of attention because of her technique in tracking her own mental health.

Tracking mental health your own way

According to a new survey conducted by STAT, college students are demanding mental health services at such a high rate that many colleges simply can’t keep up. Wait times end up being two to three weeks–which can be far too late if a client is really in crisis and needs counseling.
This is why it’s so important to keep track of one’s mental health. If a client learns early on how to monitor their emotions and identify issues, transitions or big steps in life–such as college–can go a lot more smoothly.
One teenage girl came up with an easy, creative way to track her mental health: a bullet journal. For many people–teens especially–keeping up a detailed journal each day outlining how they felt can seem tedious and impossible to maintain. That’s why 16-year-old Kyra Bailey came up with a fast, but relevant system to track her emotions.
She has one piece of paper that’s a chart with 365 days on it and she colors in a square in a specific color depending on how she felt that day. Bailey created a color coding system which ranged from red for “amazing, fantastic” days to purple for “sad, depressed” days to green for “sick” days to few others.
While it may not be the most meticulous way of tracking mental health, it’s certainly better than nothing–and it’s so easy to do that almost anyone could do it.
Teaching this type of mental health tracking as a basis for all students could vastly help adolescents learn to not just recognize what they’re feeling each day, but begin to notice patterns in their behavior over time. This type of minor task could actually really provide help for troubled teens.
